Smushi & The Little Mermaid

Off to Copenhagen, Denmark!

Pictured above is Frederik V on Horseback.  This sculpture in Amalienborg Square, framed by the four symmetrical wings of the Amalienborg palace, actually cost MORE money than all the buildings surrounding it!  It is considered to be one of the notable equestrian monuments of its time.

Jenesa and I love sushi....but never heard of SMUSHI.  After a short walk through Copenhagen, we stopped for lunch at the Royal Smushi Cafe.

The signature dish smushi is authentic Danish open-faced sandwiches, locally called ‘smørrebrød’, topped with something similar to sushi, allowing you to taste a variety of small dishes in one meal. It was quite delicious...and kinda famous!  Oprah Winfrey has eaten smushi at this cafe!

Dating back centuries, smørrebrød traditionally consisted of a slice of dark dense rye bread loaded with toppings such as herring, roast beef or sliced potatoes, and a range of garnishes from horseradish to orange slices. Smushi is stacked in layers like sushi. That brings out flavors from the meat, fishes and dressings.

Following our smushi lunch....we took a one hour cruise through the Copenhagen canals and harbor to see numerous sights including Christiansborg Slot, Christianshavn, the Royal Library, Opera House, Amalienborg Palace and the Little Mermaid.

One of the most famous Copenhagen tourist attractions is the Little Mermaid.  The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land.  The sculpture turned 100 years old in August, 2013.
