Praise the Ice (Bar) Gods!

I'm usually the one responsible for taking all the photos on our travels.....unless it requires climbing lots and lots of steps to get a good picture! That's when Jenesa stays at the bottom and the other Leonard hustles to the top to wave for the photo (see me?).
Let's be honest....at this point we're pretty tired of seeing castles, cathedrals, fortresses, and tour guides. We're hoping Helsinki, Finland has something more to offer than those four repeating themes of European cities!
This is definitely not a cathedral....but a rock church! Excavated directly into solid rock, the Temppeliaukio church is situated right in the heart of Helsinki. The church hall is covered with a dome, lined with copper and supported on the rock walls by reinforced concrete beams. The interior walls are of rugged rock and rubble wall. Before noon, the sunlight spreads from the row of windows surrounding the roof periphery to the altar wall, where an ice-age crevice serves as the altarpiece.
Pretty cool, huh? Just wait! The "cool" was about to get "cool-er" at our next stop!
Since we're already a bit chilly over here....we signed up to visit a year-round indoor Winter Wonderland.
After being comfortably wrapped in warm clothing, we were able to explore this giant facility. An ice bar. Snow! Several ice igloos with masterful carvings on the walls. Husky dog sled rides. And, some other fun activities that I was not too "old" for - skis, tobogganing, sledding and meeting Santa Claus!
