Bear On The Menu

No! No! No!  Not Beer!  I said BEAR is on the lunch menu today in Tallinn, Estonia.

We signed up for another walking tour today.  These walking tours obviously help us burn off all of those cruise ship calories....and most of these Baltic port towns are not very big.  We've been eating quite well on this trip....and today we heard we might get to eat some bear!

The UNESCO-protected old town of Tallinn has winding alleyways, ornate doorways and medieval courtyards.  Kings, queens and czars have walked the streets of the charming two-tiered city.  It's now starting to attract a cool and young affluent crowd in search of foodie delights and luxury boutique hotels.

For all you techies out there....a little company called Skype started in Tallinn before Microsoft came along and gobbled it up for $8.5 billion dollars.

Built in the late 1800s, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral remains to this day one of the finest examples of architecture from the Russian Empire.  Symbolic of Estonia's oppression under the empire, in the first quarter of the 20th century it was scheduled for a demolition that never took place due to lack of funding.

It was fully restored to its former glory when Estonia became independent from the Soviet Union. The interior is all copper, zinc, granite, mosaics, gilded iron crosses and stained glass.

Is it time for bear yet?  I just couldn't wait to taste this bear.  I mean....c'mon!  How often does bear appear on the Texas Roadhouse menu?  What does bear even taste like?

Well....our tour guide pointed us in the direction of Olde Hansa on the Town Hall Square.  This medieval restaurant puts on musical performances for guests, and all members of staff wear period-appropriate costumes.  Most of the food, too, harks back to Tallinn's golden age!

Unfortunately, that is NOT entirely bear on our plate.  When we looked at the menu and saw that the bear was priced at $60 dollars a plate.....we quickly resorted to the less pricey wild game sausages (which included a mixture of bear, elk, and boar meat).  Sorry!  I wasn't splurging for the bear just so you guys could see it in the blog!  No bear?  So I guess we'll try some beer!  In the background you'll see Jenesa holding a cup of  their "world famous" honey beer.  I don't know what world it comes from.....but it was absolutely disgusting!  Looks like we kinda struck out today at lunch.  :(
